As part of Bahrain’s strategy to explore for additional gas resources to meet increasing domestic gas demand, the National Oil & Gas Authority (NOGA) has opened the door for deep onshore natural gas exploration with Occidental Petroleum after a successful bid round and ratification by the parliament and HM King Hamad Bin Isa Al Khalifa on 6 October 2011.
In addition to the work done by Occidental, technical studies and analyses were carried out by French, UK, US and Australian-specialised consultancies to unlock the complex nature of deep unconventional gas reservoirs in Bahrain. The technical work is being continuously followed-up and monitored by NOGA/Bapco to ensure proper and timely execution. The next phase of the project is to start planning for the drilling of three deep exploratory wells.
